Household food and beverage products facing price increases in Japan this September will total 4,923, according to a survey by Teikoku Databank, Ltd. The figure is roughly triple the level recorded in September a year earlier and the highest single-month total since the start of 2026. Teikoku Databank described the development as the largest price hike rush of the year. The survey covered 195 major food manufacturers, and September ranks as the fourth-largest monthly total on record, after April 2023. Seasonings, including mayonnaise and soup bases, account for 1,959 items, while processed foods, including frozen foods and fish paste products, account for 1,848. Kikkoman Food Products plans to increase prices on 107 household items, including Itsudemo Shinsen Shiboritate Nama Shoyu (450 ml) and Koidashi Hon Tsuyu (500 ml). Confirmed price increases for January through November stood at 19,083 items as of the end of August, putting the 2026 annual total virtually certain to exceed the 20,609 items recorded in 2025 and surpass 20,000 for a second consecutive year. Rising crude oil prices linked to worsening Middle East tensions, the yen's continued depreciation and higher logistics costs are increasing expenses for raw materials, containers and packaging, squeezing manufacturers and raising household purchasing costs, especially for frequently purchased seasonings and processed foods.
