Hanwha Aerospace has signed an export execution contract with Spanish defense company Indra Sistemas for K9 self-propelled howitzers and related systems, marking the K9’s first entry into Western Europe and the first overseas entry of a domestically developed complete weapon system into both the U.S. and Western European markets. Contract volume, value and duration were not disclosed, but Korea Exchange disclosure criteria imply a value of at least 667.5 billion Korean won. The terms provide for a 20% advance payment at signing and a further 5% within the year. The agreement follows a March memorandum of understanding covering 128 K9-based tracked howitzers customized for the Spanish Army and 120 modified K10 ammunition resupply vehicles. Spain is pursuing a 7 trillion won artillery modernization program, with local production planned at Indra’s Gijón factory as part of Hanwha’s localization strategy. The K9’s stated operating footprint rises to 11 countries.
