Humana is preparing to leave Medicare Advantage plans affecting roughly 600,000 members in 2027, potentially forcing hundreds of thousands of seniors to select new coverage. CFO Celeste Mellet said the insurer will focus on higher-performing plans and seek to move a large share of affected members into other Humana offerings. Humana recaptured just over 40% of members affected by its 2025 exits and now has nearly 7.2 million Medicare Advantage members. The company is targeting a sustainable Medicare Advantage margin of at least 3% by 2028. Shares fell 1.81% on Friday, Aug. 28, to $385.54, ending a four-session winning streak, although HUM remained up more than 105% over six months. Members whose plans leave Medicare or stop serving their area may qualify for guaranteed-issue Medigap (supplemental coverage for Original Medicare) if they switch to Original Medicare, allowing them to apply without health-based rejection or pricing. The opportunity means affected members may want to compare replacement Medicare Advantage plans with Original Medicare and Medigap before choosing coverage.
