Bull has signed a €387.8 million contract with the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking to build LUMI-AI at CSC – IT Center for Science’s data center in Kajaani, Finland. The project, funded equally by EuroHPC JU and a six-country consortium comprising Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway and Poland, is scheduled for deployment in the second half of 2027. LUMI-AI is expected to deliver ten times the AI capacity and nearly twice the high-performance computing throughput of the existing LUMI system. Its AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs are designed to combine AI workloads with scientific simulation, offering 288 teraFLOPS of hardware-based FP64 performance, while the system will also include 6th-generation AMD EPYC processors, Bull’s BullSequana XH3500 architecture and BXI interconnect, IBM Storage Scale and Nokia networking. The system will be owned by EuroHPC, operated by CSC and governed by the consortium, with access intended for research institutions, startups, small and midsize enterprises and industry. It will run on renewable electricity and send recovered heat to Kajaani’s district heating network. LUMI-AI is the sixth EuroHPC AI Factory contract and will be co-located with IQM Quantum Computers’ LUMI-IQ platform, supporting potential quantum-classical research workflows. The project also offers a European alternative to infrastructure centered on NVIDIA hardware and proprietary interconnects, although real-world performance cannot be verified before deployment.
