Amazon Web Services (AWS) has expanded Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud (US), allowing government agencies, supporting contractors and technology partners to access AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Nvidia and xAI alongside Amazon's Nova series. The models run in isolated cloud environments designed to meet stringent U.S. government security and compliance requirements, allowing customers to select among providers without leaving AWS. The expansion comes as AWS reports accelerating financial and AI-related growth. Second-quarter 2026 revenue reached $42.2 billion, up 36.7% year over year, while operating income rose 63% to approximately $16.6 billion, producing a 39.4% operating margin. AWS's AI and in-house chip businesses each surpassed a $25 billion annualized revenue run rate, and Amazon plans to invest up to $50 billion in 2026 to add about 1.3 gigawatts of AI and high-performance computing capacity across secure U.S. regions. AWS GovCloud (US), launched in 2011 and marking its fifteenth anniversary in August this year, has supported sensitive workloads including NASA's Curiosity Mars rover and the Artemis II lunar flyby mission. The strategic test is whether broader AI model access increases public-sector adoption of GovCloud and expands its contribution to AWS growth.
