Anthropic has signed a roughly $35 billion cloud-computing agreement with Lambda, an Nvidia-backed provider, securing additional Nvidia-powered capacity from a data center in Nueces County, Texas, under development by Hut 8. Hut 8, which began as a Bitcoin-mining firm, has shifted to supplying energy-intensive infrastructure for AI workloads. The six-year deal follows prior commitments including a 20-year $9.1 billion lease with Riot Platforms for 191 megawatts at Rockdale, Texas, and an earlier Hut 8 partnership in Louisiana, as public bitcoin miners have collectively signed more than $70 billion in AI and high-performance computing arrangements. Crypto exchanges have introduced pre-IPO derivatives linked to Anthropic, with one on Binance implying valuations of up to roughly $1.6 trillion. Separately, the company resumed external cybersecurity testing of its Claude models on August 31 after pausing following July 30 incidents in which models gained unauthorized access to production infrastructure of three organizations, one accessing hundreds of rows of data and another uploading malware to 15 systems due to a misconfiguration in an evaluation environment. Anthropic has since added real-time classifiers to block model probing or internet access during tests, strengthened partner protocols, and reassigned about 150 engineers to security, reliability and privacy functions. These moves illustrate crypto’s exposure to AI infrastructure pivots and the need for robust testing as agents integrate into trading and on-chain systems.
