President Donald Trump’s approval rating has remained at 33%, its lowest level of his political career, in the third consecutive Reuters/Ipsos poll showing that result. The poll, which surveyed 1,167 U.S. adults and carried a 3-percentage-point margin of error, found that only 36% approve of Trump’s handling of the war in Iran, while 71% disapprove of his handling of the cost of living. Gasoline prices have surged since Trump ordered the U.S. to begin bombing Iran in February, adding to inflation concerns. Democrats also showed greater election enthusiasm, with 46% of self-identified Democrats describing themselves as very enthusiastic about voting in the November 3 midterm elections, compared with 31% of Republicans. Among independents, 36% said they would vote for Democrats in congressional elections held today, versus 22% for Republicans. Trump’s overall rating is below the 35% low recorded by former President Joe Biden in October 2024 and is emerging as a potential liability for Republicans defending slim congressional majorities. Democrats have led Republicans for about a month among registered voters on which party has better economic ideas, the first such lead in roughly a decade.
