House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) voiced strong reservations about a Senate-passed bill that would impose new sanctions on countries buying Russian oil, gas and other products that help fund Moscow’s war with Ukraine. Jeffries stopped short of opposing the legislation, but said it could ratify President Trump’s tariff agenda, grant his administration powers Democrats believe could be abused and ultimately make life more expensive for Americans. The proposal passed the Senate 86 to 11 earlier this month after being championed by the late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky backed the bill, while Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) urged the House to act quickly, saying the sanctions could reduce revenue for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war effort. The measure faces a more difficult path in the House, where its timing remains uncertain and it is not on the legislative calendar.
