Taiwan plans to set its defense budget above T$1 trillion ($31.47 billion) next year for the first time, President Lai Ching-te said, presenting the increase as evidence of the island’s determination to strengthen its defenses. Beijing has intensified military and political pressure on Taiwan, which it claims as its territory, while Taipei rejects those claims. Lai said stronger preparations would improve security and regional peace, and pledged continued defense self-reliance, development of the military-industrial sector, artificial intelligence and unmanned vehicles. The announcement follows Taiwan’s Legislature approving a separate $7.6 billion plan over the coming years for drone purchases and domestic production. China’s Taiwan Affairs Office criticized the spending and accused Lai’s administration of provoking cross-strait confrontation. Taiwan has also expanded drone exports, while officials in Washington have urged greater emphasis on asymmetric defenses against a stronger adversary.
