The government announced Chuseok People’s Livelihood Stabilization Measures on the 1st to curb prices ahead of Chuseok, Korea’s harvest holiday, and reduce the burden of holiday preparations. Vegetable supplies including cabbage and radishes will reach 18,000 tons, or 1.9 times the usual level, while apples and pears will total 32,000 tons, more than three times normal volumes. Livestock distribution will expand 13-fold, supplying 90,000 tons of beef and pork and 17,000 tons of chicken, while egg supplies will rise 2.4-fold. Chestnuts, jujubes and other forest products will total 2,480 tons, nine times the usual supply. The government will release 20,000 tons of reserves covering six seafood products at discounts of up to 40% from market prices, with mackerel and Alaska pollock supplies exceeding three times their usual levels. Retailers will offer discounts of up to 40% on agricultural and livestock products from the 3rd and up to 50% on major seafood products from the 9th. Fruit, ritual goods and Hanwoo (Korean beef) gift sets will be discounted by up to 50%, seafood gift sets by up to 53%, and 4,700 processed food products by up to 64%. The government said its 103 billion won discount support package is the largest ever and is intended to make price stabilization measures directly felt by consumers. Holiday loans and guarantees for small businesses and SMEs will reach 43.4 trillion won, while repayment deadlines for 62.4 trillion won of financing maturing during Chuseok will be extended by one year. The package also includes accelerated VAT refunds, early public procurement payments, deferred insurance premiums and installment support for electricity and gas bills. To boost domestic demand, the discount on Digital Onnuri Gift Certificates will rise from 7% to 10% from the 16th through the 20th, with the purchase limit increasing by 200,000 won to 1.2 million won. The government will distribute 80,000 accommodation coupons, waive highway tolls from the 24th through the 27th and cut KTX fares by 10%.
