Brazil’s top electoral court, the TSE (Brazil’s top electoral court), suspended presidential candidate Renan Santos’s digital campaign on August 31 and froze R$3.3 million, roughly $640,000, in public funds. Justice Dias Toffoli also barred Santos and running mate Aroldo Medina from radio, television and podcast debates, while restricting paid political advertising on 16 campaign profiles. The accounts were declared 12 days after the campaign registration filing. Santos became the only presidential contender to publicly support a national Bitcoin reserve after making the pledge on August 13 at Blockchain Rio 2026. He also proposed making Rio de Janeiro crypto friendly and scrapping the Tax on Financial Operations, or IOF (Brazilian tax on financial transactions), while criticizing Brazil’s crypto rules as outdated and overly centralized. Santos called the decision censorship and said his lawyers would seek an injunction from TSE president Nunes Marques. The order does not cancel his candidacy: street campaigning continues, and his originally registered website and X account remain active. Brazilians vote on October 4.
