Hanwha Ocean secured a 1.5527 trillion-won contract, approximately $1.1 billion, from Taiwan’s Yang Ming Marine Transport for six 13,650-TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships. The vessels will be built at Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje shipyard and delivered sequentially by the second half of 2029 for deployment on routes connecting Asia with North America, South America and the Mediterranean. The ammonia-ready ships can run on LNG or conventional marine fuel and will use Hanwha Ocean’s Type-B, high-manganese-steel LNG fuel tanks. The order follows Yang Ming’s earlier contract for seven 15,880-TEU LNG dual-fuel ships, bringing its Hanwha Ocean construction orders to 13 vessels. Including a 477.8 billion-won order for three VLGCs announced on the 1st, Hanwha Ocean said it had secured 38 vessels worth approximately $7.07 billion this year, as shipping companies replace aging tonnage and respond to tighter International Maritime Organization environmental rules.
