The HD Hyundai Heavy Industries labor union will begin a partial strike on the 2nd after management and the Metal Workers’ Union Hyundai Heavy Industries Branch failed to reach an agreement in their 18th round of this year’s wage and collective bargaining negotiations. Management made its first offer of the year, but the union rejected it, resulting in a breakdown in talks. The union plans a seven-hour strike on the 2nd involving executive officers, negotiation committee members and delegates, followed by rotating partial strikes among subordinate organizations through the 10th. Normal operations are scheduled for the 3rd and 7th, while all union members are due to stage a four-hour partial strike on the 15th. The action follows an Aug. 27 strike vote that secured 66.18% approval, with 5,379 of 5,607 participating members voting in favor out of 8,127 total union members. The union is seeking a monthly base-pay increase of 149,600 Korean won excluding seniority-based raises, a 100% bonus increase, at least 30% of operating profits, broader ordinary-wage treatment for vacation allowances and congratulatory payments, and new hires. The company and union settled their 2022 collective bargaining without a strike, ending a period without labor disputes that had lasted nine years since 2013. Strikes have resumed every year since 2023, making this the fourth consecutive year if the scheduled action proceeds.
