The European Union will suspend imports of Brazilian meat and other animal-origin products from September 3 after Brazil failed to provide guarantees that its production complies with EU rules on antimicrobial use. The measure covers beef, poultry, eggs, honey and casings. An EU audit of Brazilian poultry and honey production is due to conclude by the end of the week, but results will not be immediately available. For beef, Brazil was the EU's second-largest supplier in 2025, and the bloc is seeking guarantees covering animals' entire life cycle. The Commission gave no timetable for lifting the suspension. EU rules prohibit antimicrobials used to promote animal growth and ban medicines used to treat humans, including antibiotics, because excessive use can contribute to resistant bacteria.
