South Korean airlines are raising fuel surcharges on domestic and international routes for tickets issued from September 1 as jet fuel prices rebound after three consecutive monthly declines. Korean Air’s international surcharge will range from 48,000 won to 354,000 won one-way, up from 35,200 won to 259,200 won in August. On routes from Incheon to New York, Dallas, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington and Toronto, the one-way charge will increase to 354,000 won, bringing the round-trip surcharge to 708,000 won, up 189,600 won, or 36.6%. Asiana Airlines will charge 290,100 won on major long-haul routes including Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Sydney, Frankfurt, Paris and London, up 43% from 202,900 won. Low-cost carriers including Jin Air, T’way Air and Jeju Air are also increasing international surcharges. Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Jin Air and Air Seoul will charge 20,900 won one-way on domestic routes, up 26.7% from August. The increases apply according to ticket-issuance date, so passengers who ticketed before September will not pay the higher amount even if they fly later.
