A Reuters/Ipsos poll found broad U.S. opposition to President Donald Trump’s escalating confrontation with Canada over additional tariffs and the renaming of Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” Fifty-seven percent of Americans opposed more tariffs on Canadian goods, versus 20% in support, while 63% opposed the lake renaming and only 14% backed it; about one-third of Republicans supported the rename and 43% opposed it, with just 6% of Democrats approving. Sixty-eight percent favored making tradeoffs with Canada even without getting most of what the United States wants, and only 4% expected tariffs to help their personal finances versus 40% who expected a mostly negative impact. The survey of 1,023 adults was conducted Aug. 28-30, with the margin of error reported as 3.5 to 4 percentage points. After trade talks collapsed, Trump imposed sweeping 50% tariffs on many Canadian goods and on Aug. 27 ordered the lake renamed, a change Google Maps and Apple Maps quickly reflected for U.S. usage while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canadians would keep the historic name; Canada answered with retaliatory tariffs of 15% to 50% on U.S. exports and provincial spirits boycotts that drove American spirits exports to Canada down more than 70% to $60 million between March and December 2025.
