Crystal Palace has launched a last-ditch effort to sign 21-year-old Belgian winger Malick Fofana from Lyon after Sunderland agreed a deal worth approximately £30 million. Sunderland’s package includes £25.6 million upfront and £4.3 million in performance-related add-ons, with Fofana reportedly scheduled for a medical and a five-year contract containing an option for another year. French outlet L’Équipe says Palace is weighing an overbid, despite Fofana reportedly rejecting the club earlier this summer. Fofana’s prior European experience is particularly attractive as both clubs prepare for Europa League campaigns. Arsenal and manager Mikel Arteta had also pursued him but withdrew after failing to meet Lyon’s £30 million-to-£40 million asking price. Lyon’s financial pressure to sell and balance its books has made the deal vulnerable until contracts are signed, leaving the player’s preference, coaching relationships and sporting project as additional factors.
