Crypto security losses fell 49.5% month over month to about $136.3 million in August, even as the number of major hacks rose 67% to 50 from 30 in July, according to PeckShieldAlert. The TectonicFi incident accounted for about $74 million, more than half of the monthly total, and was ranked the fourth-largest cryptocurrency theft of 2026 at that point. Most of the affected funds remained within the ecosystem after only about $6 million was bridged away before Cronos paused its chain. The exploiter later began laundering accessible assets, including transfers toward Bitcoin. Other major losses included Moonwell at roughly $8.7 million, Termlabs at $8.5 million, Coinsbuy at $7.9 million, TAC at $7.5 million, Injective at about $4.8 million, MANTRA at $3.6 million, BounceBit at $3 million, Cosmos Labs at $2.87 million and Aquifer at $2.47 million. The figures show that lower dollar losses did not correspond to fewer security incidents, with attacks becoming more frequent even as aggregate damage declined.
