European equities extended their decline on Tuesday as concerns over tight financial conditions weighed on the economic outlook. The Euro STOXX 50 fell 0.9% to 6,365, while the STOXX Europe 600 lost 0.6% to 647. Further US-Iran strikes prolonged the suspension of energy exports from the Persian Gulf, pushing up fuel prices and adding to inflation risks. The higher-energy-price environment had already lifted eurozone headline inflation, strengthening expectations of an ECB (European Central Bank) interest-rate increase this month. SAP, Prosus and Adyen fell between 4% and 2.6%, while Siemens, Schneider and Rheinmetall each dropped about 2.5%. Novartis rose 6.3% after its experimental multiple sclerosis pill succeeded in two late-stage trials.
