Chinese President Xi Jinping’s first visit to Egypt in a decade is highlighting a relationship that spans infrastructure, manufacturing, energy, trade, security and diplomacy. The Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone, launched in phases along the Suez Canal, has grown into an industrial cluster of nearly 200 companies, attracted more than $4.7 billion in cumulative investment and created about 10,000 jobs. The partnership also carries wider strategic significance as Egypt diversifies ties beyond the United States while retaining its longstanding relationship with Washington, and as Beijing presents China as a stabilizing force and important Global South partner. China-Egypt trade reached 95.19 billion yuan ($14.16 billion) in the first seven months of 2026, up 18.7% year on year, with Egyptian agricultural exports to China rising sharply. Xi and President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi marked 70 years of diplomatic relations and called for deeper cooperation, including a China-Egypt community with a shared future, while regional security, the Suez Canal and coordination through BRICS and the United Nations added geopolitical weight to the visit.
