CEL Solicitors says it has traced more than 5,500 BTC it believes belong to former users of Intersango, an early Bitcoin exchange that disappeared more than a decade ago. At a current Bitcoin price near $78,824, the coins are worth roughly $433.5 million. One former UK customer recovered 61 BTC after instructing CEL on Jan. 20; the case settled on May 28 and returned all the coins, then worth about $4.81 million. Former users will need records linking old exchange balances to their identities and the assets, including emails, bank statements, support tickets and account records. Intersango wound down after ending GBP and USD trading in late 2012, its website had gone dark by early 2014, and Companies House records show Intersango Ltd ceased to exist on March 22, 2016. California litigation and a 2025 Court of Appeal opinion in Norman v. Strateman provide a wider legal context for customer Bitcoin claims. A separate 2025 filing alleges a customer balance of 15.46306965 BTC, worth about $1.22 million at current prices. Higher Bitcoin prices could increase the incentive to pursue old claims, but the age and scarcity of records, legal expenses and competing property disputes remain major obstacles. Blockchain tracing can reconstruct coin movements, but ownership still depends on evidence connecting a person to an exchange account and balance.
