Porter, who is entering the final year of his deal, practiced Tuesday for the first time since being activated from the physically unable to perform list on Sunday. A back injury limited him during the preseason after he tweaked it on the first day of training camp. Head coach Mike McCarthy said last week that contract talks had reached an "impasse," implying there would be no further discussions toward a long-term extension. Asked whether he would play without an extension, Porter said he needed to speak with the team’s senior decision-makers and his agents. McCarthy said the Steelers were unsure whether Porter would be ready for Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons and that the decision would depend on his health after the following week’s practices. Porter said he was still working to regain full fitness and would approach his recovery day by day.
