South Korean residents and corporations reported 10.5 trillion won in overseas virtual assets in the 2026 overseas financial account declarations, down 5.4% from the previous year as the National Tax Service attributed the decline to lower cryptocurrency prices. The number of virtual-asset filers rose 1.8% to 2,362. Overall overseas financial account declarations increased 13.3% to 107.1 trillion won, with 7,484 declarants, and first-time overseas trust filings added 3.8 trillion won, bringing the combined total to 111 trillion won. Overseas stocks accounted for a record 61.3 trillion won, or 57.2% of the total, supported by overseas subsidiary listings and higher valuations. The United States led by declared amount at 29.7 trillion won, followed by India at 28.9 trillion won. The tax authority plans to verify filings through cross-border information exchanges and foreign-exchange records, while the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework is scheduled to begin automatic information exchanges in 2027.
