Kim Won-jun, a 61-year-old police veteran with no airport work experience, took office as president and CEO of Korea Airports Corporation, setting a 1 trillion-won revenue target and promising a return to operating profit. At his inauguration in Seoul, Kim pledged to overhaul the corporation’s financial structure, normalize facility usage fees and investment funding, develop commercial strategies tied to changing passenger spending and regional tourism, and make public safety the absolute management standard. He also outlined an intelligent airport strategy using artificial intelligence, robotics and KAC-BIM, or airport construction information modeling, while committing to performance-based personnel management and stronger cooperation across the organization. Kim faces six consecutive years of operating losses since 2020, losses at 10 of the corporation’s 14 airports last year, criticism over recurring police appointments and the continuing investigation into the Dec. 29, 2024 Jeju Air crash at Muan Airport.
