Gyeongbuk police are reviewing a detention-warrant application for Andong Mayor Kwon Ki-chang after questioning him as a suspect on Aug. 31 over alleged political-fund and election-law violations. Police allege Kwon received 50 million Korean won through aides during the 2022 local elections and that aides helped recruit People Power Party responsible party members ahead of this year’s June local elections. Separately, police referred Pohang Mayor Park Yong-seon to prosecutors after supplementary investigations into alleged violations of the Public Official Election Act and embezzlement. Park is accused of covering a 20 million Korean won payment for a youth group that received a 180 million Korean won subsidy, as well as embezzling funds through a family-linked company.
