The European Union’s General Court rejected Norwegian browser maker Opera Ltd.’s challenge to the European Commission’s decision not to designate Microsoft’s Edge as a Digital Markets Act gatekeeper. Judges found that Edge was not a critical gateway for businesses reaching consumers, despite meeting the law’s quantitative thresholds, and accepted Microsoft’s sufficiently substantiated arguments that it lacked gatekeeper status. The ruling preserves Edge’s exemption from the DMA’s obligations for dominant technology platforms and extends the Commission’s run of court victories in Big Tech enforcement. Opera’s shares closed at $18.77 on Tuesday, down 2.39%, while the company had a market capitalization of $1.67 billion, compared with Microsoft’s $3.72 trillion.
