Shinhan Bank has raised base rates on major deposit and installment savings products by 0.2 to 0.3 percentage points. The 12-month Sol Convenient Time Deposit and standard time deposit now both pay 2.55%. KB Kookmin Bank and Hana Bank are considering similar increases, while Standard Chartered Bank Korea has already adjusted selected products and Industrial Bank of Korea is offering up to 3.76% on SME finance bonds with special preferential rates. Top rates on some commercial-bank time deposits have reached the high 3% range, savings-bank products exceed 4%, and selected installment savings products offer double-digit headline rates. Time-deposit balances at the five largest banks rose 20.292 trillion won in one month to 1,005.2319 trillion won, outpacing the 16.7125 trillion-won increase in total deposits. Analysts and industry officials expect rising global sovereign-bond yields, possible policy-rate increases toward 3.5%, and safe-asset demand to keep directing funds into fixed-maturity deposits.
