President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz the Trump Strait and said the waterway was under U.S. control, while Iran maintained that it was closed and under Iranian authority. Senators Bernie Sanders and Chuck Schumer criticized the proposal as the Iran conflict pushed diesel prices to $5.69 a gallon and gasoline to $4.12, and as more than 17 million barrels of oil crossed Hormuz on Monday. The proposal followed U.S. strikes in Iran, Iranian attacks on American bases, reports of Russian assistance to Iran’s missile program and other Trump-backed renaming efforts.
