Hanwha Ocean has secured a contract worth 1.5527 trillion won, or approximately $1.1 billion, from Taiwan's Yang Ming Marine Transport for six 13,650-TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships. The vessels will be built at Hanwha Ocean's Geoje shipyard and delivered sequentially by the second half of 2029 for deployment on routes linking Asia with North America, South America and the Mediterranean. The ships will run on LNG or conventional marine fuel and will be ammonia-ready for potential future conversion. They will also use Hanwha Ocean's independently developed Type-B LNG fuel tanks made from high-manganese steel, which can withstand LNG storage temperatures of minus 163 degrees Celsius and reduce material costs compared with nickel alloy steel or aluminum. Hull optimization is intended to improve fuel efficiency and cargo capacity. The follow-on order comes about one year after Yang Ming ordered seven 15,880-TEU LNG dual-fuel ships from Hanwha Ocean, taking the carrier's total construction orders with the shipbuilder to 13 vessels. Hanwha Ocean said it has won 38 vessels worth approximately $7.07 billion so far this year, including a three-VLGC order worth 477.8 billion won announced on the 1st, as shipping companies replace aging tonnage and respond to tighter International Maritime Organization environmental rules.
