Yong Hye-in, a Basic Income Party lawmaker nominated as Minister of Gender Equality and Family, faces police complaints and political criticism over alleged Political Funds Act violations, election-related conduct and her decision to retain her parliamentary seat while serving as minister. She declined to answer reporters’ questions at the personnel hearing preparation office on the morning of the 4th, reiterating her position that she would explain the issues at the confirmation hearing. Yong reported total assets of 475.285 million Korean won. Scrutiny has also focused on her husband’s party salary, the Basic Income Party’s subsidies and the party’s earlier opposition to state support for political parties. The party and the Ministry of Employment and Labor say 70 million Korean won in job subsidies received since the party’s establishment in 2020 was legally unproblematic, while critics accuse the party of benefiting from public funds it previously opposed.
