OpenAI will provide $1 billion in subsidized access to cybersecurity models, training and technical support over six months through its Daybreak program, aimed at organizations defending against AI-enabled attacks. The package is not a fund or grant program and covers discounted Daybreak access, whose Blue and Red tiers offer standard and specialized cyber models for approved defensive work. Water and wastewater systems, electricity operators, state and local governments, community and regional banks, nonprofits and open-source maintainers are priorities, while crypto exchanges, custodians and blockchain protocols were not listed. Open-source crypto projects could fit the maintainer category as vulnerabilities affect software securing billions of dollars. The initiative follows OpenAI's disclosure that Astra can identify unknown software flaws and develop working attacks without human guidance at every stage, raising concerns around zero-day exploits. Recent incidents at BTCPay Server, Core Lightning and Coldcard have sharpened those concerns, while more than three dozen crypto companies have sought earlier defender access to leading AI security models.
