Taiwan stocks rebounded sharply on the 4th after Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller signaled a pause in rate hikes, lifting all three major U.S. stock indices in the previous session. The Taiwan Capitalization Weighted Stock Index opened at 45,991.28, up 133.62 points, and accelerated more than 740 points intraday to exceed 46,600 and reclaim the 46,000-point psychological level. TSMC rose NT$25 to NT$2,415 and led the advance, while MediaTek gained more than 3% to NT$4,485. Hon Hai and Quanta Computer also advanced, although Evergreen Marine Corporation (Taiwan) declined. The move reversed the previous session's 307.05-point loss, when turnover reached NT$946.271 billion, or approximately $29.9 billion. Analysts said dovish Federal Reserve comments eased concerns about further monetary tightening. They added that supportive economic data could sustain foreign institutional buying and move the index toward previous highs, while warning that the market's rapid gains could bring profit-taking pressure.
