The Indonesian rupiah hovered near IDR 17,650 per U.S. dollar on Friday, staying below IDR 17,700 for a second consecutive session. The dollar weakened as traders reduced expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike this month after dovish comments from a central bank official. Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti said domestic inflation remains under control and urged closer cooperation among the government, central bank, businesses, and economists to support growth. Gains were limited by concerns that El Niño could disrupt food supplies and raise prices in the coming months. Investors were also cautious before next week’s releases of August foreign exchange reserves, consumer confidence, and July retail sales, which could provide new signals on domestic demand and monetary policy. Despite those risks, the rupiah had gained about 0.25% so far and was headed for a fifth consecutive weekly advance.
