Chinese authorities arrested 52 Singaporeans in Guangxi following a law enforcement operation targeting pyramid scheme activities and related offences, Singapore’s Second Minister Sim Ann said on Friday. Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and police are engaging with Chinese authorities for more information, while the government provides consular assistance without interfering in China’s judicial process or investigations. Singapore’s embassy in Beijing and Consulate-General in Guangzhou have visited the detainees three times to check their well-being, relay requests and family messages, and help with administrative matters. Sim warned Singaporeans to exercise caution over overseas or local schemes involving participant recruitment, large upfront payments or unusually high returns. She gave no further details on the alleged offences. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Chinese authorities investigate cases involving foreign nationals in accordance with the law while safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of those involved.
