Dollar-yen traded narrowly in Tokyo on the 4th as fading expectations for an early Federal Reserve rate hike initially pushed the pair down to 155.29. Bargain-hunting later lifted it to 156.44, but buying momentum faded and the pair consolidated in the lower 156 range. At 5:00 p.m., dollar-yen was around 156.30, compared with 156.34 at 3:00 p.m., while buying stalled near 156.45 as traders awaited the U.S. employment report due that night. EUR/JPY was around 181.66 at 5:00 p.m., down roughly 12 sen for the euro from 181.78 at 3:00 p.m., after reaching 181.94 and remaining at elevated levels. EUR/USD was little changed at $1.1623, compared with $1.1627 at 3:00 p.m., within a narrow $1.1621-to-$1.1633 range. The market has fully priced a rate hike at the European Central Bank's governing council meeting scheduled for the 10th of the following week, while expectations of a cautious stance on further tightening are limiting the euro's upside. The Nikkei Stock Average climbed 806.46 points to close at 65,020.94, recovering the 65,000 level. The U.S. employment report is being watched for clues on Federal Reserve policy: weaker labor data could accelerate dollar selling and push dollar-yen toward 155, while stronger data could support a rebound toward the upper 156 range. Tokyo traders are expected to avoid aggressive positioning before the release.
