The Korean government has decided to launch Korea Power Generation Co., Ltd. on October 1, 2027, by merging five state-run generators into a wholly owned subsidiary of Korea Electric Power Corporation. The consolidation is part of a broader plan to reduce the number of state-run firms from 524 to 415, improve management efficiency and support the energy transition. The new company will have one president, one auditor and four executive directors, replacing the five presidents, five auditors and 10 executive directors across the existing companies. Its four divisions will cover renewable energy, just transition, safety technology, and planning and management. Of the 2,400 headquarters employees, 1,800 will move to the integrated headquarters and 600 will be assigned to three or four regional renewable energy headquarters. The company will operate 53.076 gigawatts of capacity, ranking 14th globally and eighth excluding Chinese companies. The government plans to establish a preparation committee, pursue special legislation, review merger procedures and seek possible exemptions from corporate combination reviews. The headquarters location remains undecided, while the treatment of 13,400 employees and the alignment of labor, pay and promotion systems remain key challenges.
