Turkey has signed a cooperation agreement with AIIB (a multilateral infrastructure lender) covering environmental investment, urban infrastructure and climate change efforts. The first phase will direct about €400 million ($465 million) to environmental projects in the Marmara region, mainly advanced biological wastewater treatment facilities, as Turkey works to clean the Marmara Sea and combat marine mucilage, commonly called sea snot. Environment Minister Murat Kurum said the agreement also includes expanding treatment capacity and strengthening environmental infrastructure, but gave no details on later phases or the cooperation’s total potential value. AIIB Vice President Ajay Bhushan Pandey said Turkey is among the bank’s largest investment destinations. The agreement was signed in Istanbul during a Climate Finance Summit held ahead of the COP31 U.N. climate conference in November.
