Arm and Samsung start 2nm SoC project for on-device AI

  • Arm and Samsung Electronics launched joint development of on-device AI system-on-chips.
  • Samsung will mass-produce the chips on its 2nm process; Arm supplies accelerator architecture.
  • OpenAI’s possible role remains unconfirmed by Samsung, Arm and OpenAI.

Arm and Samsung Electronics have entered a joint development program for system-on-chips targeting on-device artificial intelligence in smartphones and other end devices. Arm will provide the AI accelerator architecture, register-transfer level design and customer requirements, while Samsung’s System LSI division will develop the SoC and its foundry division will mass-produce it using a 2nm Gate-All-Around process. The project operates under a Limited Use License framework that restricts Arm’s technology to specified customers and products. Market speculation has identified OpenAI as a possible end customer, but Samsung, Arm and OpenAI have not confirmed that claim. The program gives Samsung an opportunity to combine chip design and manufacturing services, building on earlier Arm collaborations and potentially strengthening its position in the growing custom AI-chip market. Broadcom reported $16.7 billion in third-quarter AI semiconductor revenue, 73% of it from custom chips, and expects fourth-quarter revenue of $21.7 billion. The Samsung-Arm project remains in development, with its final customer, specifications, shipment schedule and production scale still unconfirmed.
