A British investor identified as Chris has recovered 61 Bitcoin worth approximately £3.3 million, or about $4.5 million, more than 12 years after losing access to holdings purchased through early U.K. exchange Britcoin. Chris invested around £1,500, then about $2,000, in December 2011 when Bitcoin traded below $4. Britcoin later became Intersango, whose services ceased and whose website was offline by early 2014. CEL Solicitors said it completed the recovery in about four months without law-enforcement intervention by combining blockchain tracing with bank and exchange records that established Chris's ownership. The reported recovery amount of 61 Bitcoin revises an earlier description of the case as involving about 59 Bitcoin. CEL's sister company, The Crypto Tracing Experts, has identified a wallet holding more than 5,500 Bitcoin that it believes may be connected to other former Intersango customers, although the wallet address, its controller and the legal recovery mechanism have not been publicly disclosed. Former customers would need records such as bank statements, exchange emails and deposit confirmations to establish individual claims. Chris plans to use part of the recovered value to support his family, including a larger home and help with his son's housing debt, while retaining some Bitcoin despite concerns over price declines and theft.
