U.S. employment is projected to rise by 5.9 million jobs to 176.2 million between 2025 and 2035, a 3.5% increase that would be far slower than the previous decade's 10.9% growth, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Utilities are expected to post the fastest industry growth at 9.8%, driven largely by electricity demand from data centers and artificial intelligence, while solar electric power generation employment is forecast to increase 153% and wind power employment 62%. Healthcare and social assistance is projected to add 2.2 million jobs, or 37% of all new employment, as the population ages and chronic diseases become more prevalent. Professional, scientific and technical services is expected to grow 8.6% and add 926,700 jobs, with data scientists and computer and information research scientists among the fastest-growing occupations. At the same time, office and administrative support employment is projected to fall by 752,100 jobs, while sales and related occupations decline 1.4% as e-commerce and AI-driven productivity gains reshape demand.
