Kyrgyzstan has set 2027 timelines for real-world trials of its digital som and pilot testing of an electronic licensing and supervision platform for virtual-asset providers. President Sadyr Japarov chaired the National Council for the Development of Virtual Assets and Blockchain Technologies on September 5, 2026, in Cholpon-Ata, where officials also discussed KGST, a stablecoin pegged to the Kyrgyz som, taxation, security risks and potential sanctions exposure. The National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic must develop and internally test a basic digital som platform by December 31, 2026 before beginning real-world testing in 2027 and a phased national rollout. The National Agency for Virtual Assets and Blockchain Technologies must determine the licensing platform's cost and propose funding within one month, with pilot testing due to start January 1, 2027. It also has three months to advance by-laws and proposed amendments to the Law of the Kyrgyz Republic "On Virtual Assets." Kyrgyzstan continues to develop USDKG, a state-controlled, gold-backed stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar for cross-border payments and trade.
