Hargreaves Lansdown, the UK’s largest direct-to-investor brokerage, listed nine crypto exchange-traded notes on September 3, 2026, becoming the last major UK investment platform to offer regulated retail access to the products. The Bristol-based firm manages more than £170 billion for roughly 2 million clients, but its launch came 150 days after HM Revenue and Customs ended new crypto ETN purchases in standard Stocks and Shares ISAs. The notes, issued by iShares, WisdomTree, 21Shares, Invesco, CoinShares and Bitwise, provide exchange-traded price exposure to Bitcoin or Ether without giving investors direct ownership, private keys or wallets. They can be held at HL only through a Fund and Share Account or a self-invested personal pension, and are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Access requires either restricted-investor self-certification or certified high-net-worth status, followed by an appropriateness assessment and a mandatory 24-hour cooling-off period. The products trade on the London Stock Exchange during standard market hours, unlike cryptocurrency markets, which operate continuously. Their launch adds a major distribution channel to a UK market that has recorded about $1.5 billion in crypto ETN trading since the Financial Conduct Authority lifted its retail ban in October 2025, although tax restrictions, eligibility tests and limited trading hours continue to constrain adoption.
