The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources will brief Democratic Party of Korea lawmakers on the results of its U.S. investment negotiations at an 11 a.m. closed-door party-government consultation on the 7th, indicating that the talks have entered their final stage. Under the Special Act on Investment in the U.S., the government must report to the relevant National Assembly standing committees before finalizing negotiations. The ministry will explain the negotiations’ overview, scale and subsequent procedures to lawmakers from the Planning and Finance Committee and the Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs, and Startups Committee. Trade Minister Park Jung-sung and working-level officials are expected to attend, while Minister Kim Jung-kwan will accompany President Lee Jae Myung on a visit to France. Kim held meetings with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick during U.S. visits on August 16 and September 1 as negotiations continued. The Democratic Party plans to share the details with the People Power Party and coordinate full committee sessions afterward. The government has maintained September as its target for announcing its first U.S. investment project. A Texas liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant project is reportedly the leading candidate, but its announcement has been delayed by differences over project costs and profit-sharing ratios.
