South Korea's ruling Democratic Party of Korea has decided to process the Special Act on Mega Special Zones through the National Assembly's National Policy Committee, prompting the opposition People Power Party to demand that the bill instead go to the Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs and Startups Committee. The opposition has called the move "committee shopping" and accused the ruling party of bypassing legitimate legislative review. The dispute comes as the proposed legislation would establish renewable energy pilot complexes near mega special districts, enable direct power purchase agreements between generators and industrial users, and provide regulatory support for industrial development. The bill is expected to include about 330 general exemptions and 264 legal provisions, while provisions from the renewable energy cities law, also known as the RE100 industrial complex law, are under consideration for incorporation.
