South Korea’s KOSPI is hovering around the 6,000 level as average daily trading value fell to 20.0484 trillion won during the first three trading days of September, the lowest monthly figure this year. The measure declined 22.4% from August’s 25.846 trillion won and is less than half the roughly 50 trillion won recorded during the market’s May and June surge. The KOSPI closed at 9,110 on June 22 before falling to around 5,500 in July, then recovered but remained within 6,200 to 6,800 in August without closing above 7,000. Rising government bond yields in major global economies have strengthened risk aversion. KOSDAQ average daily trading value fell to 4.9929 trillion won, down 33.9% from last year’s 7.5476 trillion won average, after reaching 15.5661 trillion won in May. Korea Investment & Securities now forecasts a monthly KOSPI range of 6,200 to 7,400, compared with its previous upper target of 11,000. Analyst Kim Dae-joon said the market had developed downside rigidity but that a trend reversal would take time.
