CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index was 42, unchanged from the previous day, after an earlier report put the reading at 43 following a rise from 27 over seven days. The index compares the 90-day price performance of Bitcoin with the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, excluding stablecoins and wrapped coins. CoinMarketCap defines altcoin season as a period when at least 75% of those assets outperform Bitcoin, leaving the latest reading below that threshold. The measure indicates relative performance within the crypto market rather than whether capital is leaving digital assets altogether. Bitcoin was hovering near $80,000 ahead of U.S. inflation data on Sept. 11 and the Federal Reserve’s policy decision on Sept. 16. CoinMarketCap prediction-market data put the probability of Bitcoin closing above $80,000 on Tuesday at 43.5%. Retail attention also spread to tokenized Nvidia and Tesla, Chinese-language memecoins and tokens named after AI labs including OpenAI and Anthropic. Alice Liu, Head of Research at CoinMarketCap, said the trend reflected an internal rotation within crypto, with retail investors increasingly following themes across traditional and digital assets.
