Chinese equities posted mixed performances across Monday and Tuesday as investors awaited China’s August trade data. The Hang Seng Index fell about 0.9%, or 226 points, to open at 25,428 after reaching a two-week high, while the Shanghai Composite rose 0.3% to 3,945 and the Shenzhen Component declined 0.3% to 13,731. Economists expected August exports to grow 25% year on year from 23.9% in July and imports to expand 30% from 27.5%; China’s trade surplus was forecast at $120.1 billion, compared with $101.1 billion a year earlier and $112.5 billion in July. Stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs data raised expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike this month, while Beijing’s preliminary anti-dumping measures on Japanese semiconductor-production chemical imports added to concerns over China-Japan tensions linked to Taiwan.
