Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin rejected Liron Shapiro's forecast that artificial intelligence could drive Bitcoin down by more than 50% within two years by eroding confidence in its security. Shapiro, whose surname appeared as Shapira in earlier coverage, initially put the probability at 50% and later lowered it to 40%. Buterin said he remains optimistic about long-term cybersecurity, views security-upgrade transitions as the central challenge, and assigns very low odds to AI fundamentally breaking Bitcoin's SHA-256 hashing or proof-of-work system. The disagreement centers on whether AI-assisted attacks against wallets, mining pools, software clients, bridges and other infrastructure can outpace defenders before vulnerabilities are fixed. Bitcoin swap provider Boltz indefinitely suspended its service after months of automated probing and contained exploits, despite its non-custodial structure protecting customer funds.
