A Katowice court approved pretrial detention for Roman Ż. on September 7, 2026, after prosecutors charged him with participating in an organized criminal group and allegedly misappropriating at least PLN 7.8 million, or about $2.1 million, from Zondacrypto users through interference with computer data. Roman Ż. denied the allegations. Police detained him in Silesia on September 5 after receiving information that he planned to travel to China, and searches recovered exchange-related documents and valuable watches. The wider investigation covers suspected large-scale fraud and money laundering involving Zondacrypto, formerly BitBay, and has attracted more than 3,600 customer complaints. Prosecutors initially estimated losses of at least PLN 350 million and said the figure could increase. The exchange operator, BB Trade Estonia OÜ, was declared insolvent in Estonia on August 27, while prosecutors have frozen more than PLN 100 million and EUR 4 million in a French bank account for possible compensation. The inquiry also examines the 2022 disappearance of BitBay founder Sylwester Suszek and has been extended into January 2027.
