NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said human-level AI has arrived, crediting OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra with reaching artificial general intelligence, or AGI (AI performing intellectual work at human level). Huang had told G20 officials in North Carolina four days earlier that AGI was practically there and would be achieved essentially within the next couple of years. The claim remains contested because no universally accepted AGI test exists. Anthropic chief Dario Amodei described a substantially higher threshold, while physicist Mark Gubrud, Sequoia partners and cognitive scientist Gary Marcus offered differing views. The debate also has financial implications: OpenAI's earlier Microsoft agreement reportedly linked AGI to systems generating about $100 billion in profit, but an April revision removed the contractual dependence on an AGI determination. OpenAI's payments to Microsoft now continue through 2030 regardless of technological progress, leaving investors focused on how much human work such systems can reliably perform.
